The global probiotics market size is expected to grow steadily at a compound annual growth rate of 8.3%, from $61.4 billion in 2021 to $91.5 billion in 2026. Probiotics are primarily marketed as functional foods that enhance intestinal health by maintaining intestinal flora, reducing harmful bacteria, and increasing beneficial bacteria. Recent studies on probiotic patent trends have shown notable progress in technologies related to functional intestinal health. Noteworthy are four cases where mouse intestinal flora was analyzed. Further, research on human microbiome has shown that about 90% of cells in and around the human body are microbial. Understanding the human genetic environment is closely linked to insights into the microbial metagenome. Probiotic research, particularly in the intestinal microbiome, is advancing with the development of metagenome analysis technologies. Our research focuses on how the microbiome affects intestinal health, especially through its mechanisms impacting barrier functions and short-chain fatty acid production. We also review current research within a multi-omics framework and provide insights into evaluating functional raw materials for intestinal health.
