The purpose of this study is to develop a practical model of art education using virtual reality as a method of art education according to the changing times and to apply it to actual school classes. In addition, we want to find out the educational effect through the results of elementary school art classes using virtual reality. This study targeted third-grade students in elementary school and focused on developing their aesthetic competence, which is the fundamental and essential skill in art education. The study also considered the relationship between advanced technology and art, which is predicted to undergo changes in the era of the fourth industrial revolution. In addition, we actively cooperated with field teachers on how to integrate art and science subjects in the lower grades of elementary school. As a result of the study, the following educational effects were confirmed. First, learning tasks in which science and art are converged are first understood in virtual reality, and by experiencing them through 3D virtual space, the learner’s spatial and learning cognitive abilities are improved. Second, allowing learners to freely use virtual reality created an opportunity for them to become more motivated and engaged in their learning experience. They were able to fully immerse themselves in the learning process, leading to a more effective and enjoyable learning experience. Third, it was possible to increase learners’ curiosity and creativity through experiences in virtual space. Fourth, by expanding realistic surrogate experiences with realistic virtual experiences, artistic expression of the combination of realism and imagination was realized. Fifth, students were able to maximize the effect of self-directed education by projecting themselves into a new learning method using virtual reality and expanding it into a real experience. In conclusion, it was confirmed that virtual reality technology can be used as a medium for new learning materials and art creation in art education.
