This paper aims to analyze the sexuality of the clone Kathy H. in Never Let Me Go, a 2005 novel by Japanese-British author Kazuo Ishiguro, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2017, through the lens of French sociologist and philosopher Michel Foucault’s theories. The sexuality of clones in the context of biopower has not been extensively discussed in previous studies, and this paper seeks to address that oversight. To accomplish this, the paper first examines the main concepts of power outlined in Surveiller et punir: Naissance de la prison (Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison) and theoretically explores the concepts of gender and sexuality ‘dispositif’ and population in relation to biopower based on Histoire de la sexualité Tome 1: La volonté de savoir (The History of Sexuality, Volume 1: The Will to Knowledge). It then examines key concepts from Histoire de la sexualité Tome 3: Le souci de soi (The History of Sexuality, Volume 3: The Care of the Self), which discusses how humans can practice freedom against power. The paper then analyzes the implementation of biopower in Hailsham, the British boarding school in the novel. It discusses how Kathy navigates her controlled sexuality through gender discourse and normative data under the influence of biopower to realize her freedom. Lastly, the paper analyzes Norfolk, which Kathy visits at the end of the novel, in relation to Foucault’s concept of ‘hétérotopies’ (‘heterotopias’).
