The authenticity of the love narrative in Romeo and Juliet has been a subject of debate, particularly due to the protagonists’ adolescent ages. In the 21st century, rather than definitively judging the authenticity of the original love narrative, a growing number of works are emerging that explore the essential characteristic of the protagonists as teenagers. One such example is the 2022 film Rosaline, which emphasizes the necessity of reinterpreting Romeo and Juliet through the lens of modern adolescents, commonly referred to as Gen Z. Rosaline deconstructs the original narrative by presenting it from the perspective of contemporary teenagers, with a particular focus on the character development and direction centered around the protagonist, Rosaline. The film effectively articulates the perspectives and values on love held by today’s youth. Moreover, by incorporating elements from Shakespeare’s work into the Chick-Lit genre of the 1990s, Rosaline reflects the values of Gen Z female adolescents regarding marriage and ideals. This paper aims to explore Rosaline as a form of Chick-Lit literature tailored for Gen Z, highlighting how the unique feature of rewriting Shakespeare for this generation involves the integration of modern technology, media convergence, genre blending, and the incorporation of political correctness. Through an analysis of these aspects, this study seeks to shed light on how Rosaline serves as a contemporary reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s classic narrative, resonating with the cultural and societal values of today’s youth.
