In this paper, we investigated the tense form of 'observation state expression' used in the text of the Japanese novel and how it appears in the Korean translation, and in cases where tense forms appear differently. The reasons for such differences are explained. As a result of examining only the introductory part of 10 types of literary translation works, the Japanese -teiru and -teita were translated into Korean in 4 ways. Japanese 'observation state expressions' were most often translated into Korean as past tense, regardless of aspect form. These results were also confirmed through a survey conducted on native Korean and Japanese speakers. It is generally believed that Japanese and Korean are grammatically very similar. However, we were able to see that the 'observation state expressions' that appear in Japanese novels are very different from Korean, both grammatically and stylistically.
