Gangneung"s unique quilting embroidery has developed ahead of any other region, including colorful and restrained designs in the traditional Korean color spectrum, also known as Obangsaek. Despite the unique structure and colors of Gangneung"s traditional embroidery, regional limitations still need to be overcome. Therefore, this study explored ways to develop textiles that can be used in modern clothing or daily necessities while reflecting the characteristics of Gangneung"s traditional embroidery, which contains the culture and soul of tradition. In particular, among Gangneung"s traditional embroidery, the production method, patterns, and materials of traditional colored thread quilting embroidery were interpreted and reconstructed in a modern way to design textiles that can be used in everyday life, thereby laying the foundation for the development of modern Gangneung embroidery that connects tradition and the future, and further utilizing it in the development of modern Gangneung cultural products. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, the characteristics of Gangneung"s traditional quilting embroidery were first examined, and ways to utilize it in a modern way were explored. Next, seven traditional colored thread embroidery artifacts from Gangneung and the traditional embroidery patterns expressed on them were selected to design new unit patterns, which were then produced as natural objects. Two designs were developed for each pattern using the seven actual unit patterns, completing 14 textile designs. The primary textile design of each pattern was completed basically through the reflection and repetition of the unit pattern, and the secondary textile design developed a new structural design by utilizing the change in the arrangement of the unit pattern. This study is the foundation for developing traditional ladies" art crafts by newly interpreting and reconstructing Gangneung traditional colored thread embroidery, which embodies the soul of the local culture. Furthermore, this study allowed the presentation of textile materials for developing Gangneung"s local cultural products.
