In this paper, we analyze several aspects of the governed complements that use the preposition con, based on the explanation of the NGLE (2009). We observe that these complements appear mostly when symmetrical verbs are found with two asymmetrical participants: one main and the other subordinate. In other words, symmetrical verbs require the support of the preposition con to mark an asymmetrical relationship between their participants. However, there are no linguistic conditions to impose the presence of these complements that require the preposition con in some specific constructions. Its obligatory presence is based on our daily and recurrent experiences. Our cognition opts for the preposition con to mark the asymmetrical relationship between entities, but to mark other relationships or to add more nuances, it opts for other constructions or other prepositions. We explain these aspects through image schemes and cognitive processes that encompass personification, metaphor and metonymy.
