The aim of this paper is to examine Benjamin’s discussions of language from the perspective of modern linguistics and to determine where his concepts of language could be located in modern linguistics. The term ‘modern linguistics’ is used here to refer to the study of language after Saussure, who is credited with establishing the study of language as a science and thus creating the foundations of modern linguistics. In particular, it is important to note the distinction between linguistic signs as concepts and signifiers as auditory images. This is because Benjamin’s conception of language is a relatively early topic in his colourful philosophical journey, and is therefore an important factor in tracing his academic direction. For this purpose, the essays and reflections on language that appear in “Über Sprache überhaupt und über die Sprache des Menschen”(1916) are the source material for this study. This treatise is particularly important for understanding Benjamin’s conception of language because it is a relatively early work in his oeuvre and is considered the starting point and foundation of his linguistic theories throughout his life.
