This study compares and analyzes the emotion-based charactersin the late Joseon-era Cheongunjeonand Pixar’s animated film Inside Out. The personification and reverse personification of emotions function as unique narrative devices that reflect the methods of emotional expression and the psychological and social structures of human beings. This study aims to explore how emotional characters are represented in Eastern and Western narratives, how emotions are reconstructed within their respective cultural and philosophical contexts, and how emotional characters can be expanded through convergent storytelling in modern media environments. As a research method, a literature-based analysiswas conducted to examine the concepts of emotional personification and reverse personification, followed by a comparative structural analysis of the emotional characters in Cheongunjeonand Inside Out. In Cheongunjeon, emotions do not exist as independent entities but function as internal elements engaged in debateswithin the human psyche. Emotional subjects such as Respect (敬), Righteousness (義), Laziness (懈), Arrogance (傲), Integrity (剛), and Wickedness (惡)intervene in human thought and behavior. On the other hand, Inside Outpresents emotions as independent charactersthat regulate human emotions and influence psychological growth. The comparative analysis reveals that personified emotionsare depicted as independent beings, emphasizing conflict and cooperationbetween emotions in the narrative structure. In contrast, reverse-personified emotionsare integrated into human logical reasoning, serving as elements for ethical and philosophical discourse. Furthermore, the way emotions are portrayed differs according to cultural backgrounds: in Cheongunjeon, emotions are linked to moral order and social structure, whereas in Inside Out, emotions focus on individual psychological balance and growth. The findings highlight that emotional characters have significant potential for expansion through convergent storytellingacross diverse media platforms. In particular, reverse-personified emotional charactersgo beyond merely serving as tools for emotional expression. They can be expanded through transmedia storytellinginto animation, games, affective AI, virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR), functioning as key elements in emotion regulation, empathy formation, and immersive engagement. The role of emotions extends beyond simple affective responses, encompassing education, psychotherapy, and ethical dilemma explorationin various fields. Through this study, we seek to define the narrative functions of emotional characters, analyze the transformation of emotional expression methods, and explore the potential for expanding emotion-based storytelling researchin contemporary media and interdisciplinary studies.
