This paper explores the democratization movement that took place in Masan, Kyŏngsangnam-do, from April 24 to 26, 1960. The purpose of this study is to uncover the overlooked facts regarding protests led by elderly citizens and demonstrators from Pusan, and to derive the historical significance of these events in relation to the March 15 Movement. To achieve this, the study primarily analyzes newspaper reports while also utilizing supplementary sources such as student diary, telegrams produced by the U.S. Information Service and U.S. Army in Korea, and report from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of South Korea.
The findings of this study are as follows. The first protest emerged in a context where, due to the government’s severe crackdown on public resistance against the fraudulent March 15 election, young demonstrators—particularly students—found it difficult to continue protesting. This led to an expansion of the protest base to include the elderly, demonstrating that people from various social strata participated in the March 15 Movement. The second protest, which occurred after President Syngman Rhee announced his resignation on April 26, was a reenactment in Masan of the violent demonstrations and the authorities’ efforts to suppress them. Although acts of destruction against public facilities were criticized by social leaders, it is important to note that these incidents closely resembled the typical characteristics of the March 15 Movement.
