This study examines the Chinese character orthography (Ateji) of the name of foreign countries and places in the “Chosun Sibo,” a newspaper published in Busan during the Japanese colonial period. In modern Japanese, foreign words are generally written with Katakana. Previously, however, they had been written with Ateji, Chinese characters with similar pronunciations of foreign words. In addition to country names and place names, Ateji in “Chosun Sibo” are also found in loanword such as 瓦斯(ガス · gasu · gas)、護謨(ゴム · gomu · rubber)、and 硝子(ガラス · garasu · glass) as well as Japanese words 目出度し(めでたし · medetasi · congratulate)、兎に角(とにかく · tonikaku · anyway), 可成り(かなり · kanari · considerably),and 誤魔化す(ごまかす · gomakasu · deceive). As mentioned, although Ateji is still widely used in Japanese novels, comic books, lyrics, etc, to state foreign country names and place names, Katakana has been increasingly replacing Ateji. Accordingly, it has become common for modern Japanese learners and Japanese users to misspell the country names and place names written in Ateji. Looking at the custom of contemporary newspapers that are found in the current database, “白國” was literally translated as “Baekgook” in Korean causing difficulties to determine the exact current country name "Belgium". Thus, “Ateji: Transliterations” was found to accumulate and summarize the names of foreign countries and places in the “Chosun Sibo,”
