Korean pension reforms are on the way of rapid changes. It is certain that these reforms call for more painful conflicts and difficult coordinations among the various interest groups. Also the pension reforms have influences not only on the various institutions of welfare systems but labor markets and financial systems. And lastly they affect the accumulation systems or growth regimes based on developmental state which started to be transformed under the global capitalism led by financial capital.
Following these points of view, we briefly review the process of the Korean pension reforms after the IMP crisis at the end of 1997. In section ill, we investigate the influences of the pension institutions not only on social welfare systems but also on other systems, such as labour market and financial system. Moreover, we consider some risk of the market-oriented pension reforms and pension fund capitalism as a new growth (or accumulation) regime which is being motivated by liberated international financial capital. In section Ⅳ, we point out the trends and problems of Korean pension reforms so far and inquire their implications to the Korean corporate pension systems and the future reforms.
