No one will doubt that we are living in an information-driven world where media technologies have enhanced the overall process of creating, distributing and consuming information. I concluded that it was timely and even urgent to analyze the media from a philosophical perspective in order to understand the modern world as the information society.
Marshall McLuhan, a modern media guru, has already argued in his book titled
Understanding Media
that the media not only serve as a tool for delivering information but have also realigned our epistemological paradigm, the communication structure and the characteristics of society. His insight is calling for us to study the media more seriously from both the epistemological and ontological perspectives.
Mark Poster, however, suggested a somewhat different opinion. Poster proposed a new concept of the media as a mode of information, arguing that McLuhan's premise that "the media is a message" was extremely focused on the sensory organs of information receivers. 'Mode of information' refers to the social relationship formed through electronic communications, a new type of language. Through this new paradigm, Poster tried to expand the horizon of culture studies by paying more attention to the relationship that the subject haswith the objective world and the subject's viewpoint of the world.
This paper discusses the media theory suggested by McLuhan from the epistemological and ontological perspectives. And it moves to compare it with the mode of information defined by Poster in order to clarify the meaning and boundary of the media theory.
