Brian Friel's Translations is one of the playwright's best plays. The play reveals a most important period of Irish history. The play depicts Bailybeg in Donegal county around 1830; it is the period when Ireland faces a great famine and destruction of Gaelic language. Gaelic names in the map change into English symbolizing the disappearance of the Irish culture and tradition. Friel starts the play by naming--Hugh who teaches Latin at hedge school goes to take part in naming a new born baby. Hugh's son Owen who speaks both Gaelic and English is a translator. Here Owen translates arbitrarily ignoring the original meaning. George Steiner in his After Babel states that communication between individuals demand "interpret[ation] between privacies". However, Owen does not interpret, but translates freely to please the British and to the advantage of the Irish. However, at the end of the play, Owen must translate Captain Lancy's threatening remarks that he will burn down the country if Irish cannot bring to him Yolland. At this point, "Interpret between privacies" does not apply to Owen. The theme "interpret between privacies"is embodied between Yolland(a British map maker) and Maire(Irish girl). In their love relationships, they continue interpreting Gaelic into English. They create meaning through understanding each other's mind. Translation takes place through interpretation and understanding. Of course, in the process of interpretation an individual's experience and thoughts intervene; in this way communication takes place.
Hugh expresses that if we stop recreating the past image, we will fossilize. In the same context, Steiner points out that we must translate and recreate language constantly in order to put a living spirit into the language and to maintain the past image. We learn history and its treasures through language.
Hugh teaches Maire English; that she can understand the underlying meanings in English remains doubtful. Though Maire learns grammar and words, will they provide her with an ability to intertret between privacies? Hugh tries to appropriate English to Gaelic-he is not like Shaw and Wilde who have converted to the English culture; he is not like Joyce and Beckett who have chosen exile. Brian Friel like Hugh in this play makes English his own language in order to create a very special Irish English.
