??Translations became a classic and the central text in Friel’s oeuvre for a number of reasons. With its experimental representation of Irish in English, the play revives and renews the old Gaelic culture in the image of the hedge school as it translates it into another language and another time. Friel translates a Gaelic past into an Anglo-Irish present. In this way, Translations ingeniously preserves Irish history, literature, and culture through what Steiner calls the “poetic recreation or translation of a given language-world.”
??Under the Japanese rule, Kim Sa-Ryang wrote several novels in Japanese and made his debut in the Japanese literary world in 1939. Most of his works describe the dark, depressive reality of Korea during Japanese colonialism. He searches for the ways to liberate the Korean from the horrific oppression of Japanese imperialism.
??According to Homi Bhabha, such an insurgent act of cultural translation that we can see between Translations and Pulsokgipee becomes a mode of performative agency that liberates a subjected people into a future in which they rewrite their own subjectivities and narratives of identity. According to Bhabha, when the colonized mimics the colonizer, there is no exact replication. There is always a displacement, temporal and spatial. When the mimic culture is played back to the colonizer it appears strange, unnatural, and threatening. By exploring interrelationships of cultural and linguistic boundary-crossing practices in two works, this paper argues that this postcolonial strategy challenges the closed structure of national identity and deconstruct a rigidly demarcated national ideology.
