This article discusses how segments are changed in the syllables with neutral tone under the framework of Optimality Theory (OT). The focus of this article is on the appropriate ranking of the constraints in the syllables with neutral tone. It points out that the neutral tone causes laxing of the whole syllable. Segmental phenomena related to the neutral tone include the following:
(a) The unaspirated, unvoiced, plosive and unvoiced affricate onsets [p, t, k, t , t , ts] tend to become voiced.
(b) Nucleus becomes lax. (Low and mid vowels become schwa but high vowels become voiceless.)
(c) Coda becomes coalescent.
This study demonstrates that principles in neutral toned syllables are reinterpreted in the framework of violable constraints and discusses how the correct output is predicted by the interaction of these constraints. It proposes seven constraints for explaining changes in neutral toned syllables, which are ranked as follows:
Peak ＞＞ Onset ＞＞ Segment Laxing ＞＞ Coda-Con ＞＞ Max-IO, Dep-IO, Ident-IO(F)
It attempts to discuss all the phenomena found in the syllables with neutral tone. However, there are further questions left unanswered, which are coda coalescence, voiceless vowels and so on. These questions are remained for further research under the framework of Optimality Theory.
