This thesis is a critical reevaluation of J. A. Comenius' understanding of the infant and mother in the light of Object Relation Theory which stresses the importance of early relation experiences of an infant with his/her mother. For Comenius (1592-1670). a pioneer of infant education, the final goal of educational process lies in the restoration of the 'Image of God' in the human being. The object Relation Theory deals with the process of development of the whole personality of an infant which definitely depends on the quality of relation experiences with his/her mother.
Comenius seeks to nurture human beings in order to help them attain integrity of their nature (the restoration of the 'Image of God'), and to encourage them to care for the whole world in terms of harmonized relationship between God and human beings and nature. Human beings should be placed at the crux of this relationship. It is also disclosed that his infant educational thoughts was formed in the framework of pampaedia, and mother is positioned at the center of that framework.
Comenius' understanding of the infant and mother is reevaluated in the light of Object Relation Theology.
As a result of the study, the reconstruction of the Christian infant and mother education is envisioned. The purpose, the task, the contents, and the method of the Christian infant and mother education should be reconstructed by the object Relation Theory. In other words, the whole paradigm of the Christian infant and mother education should be shifted towards the Christian infant-mother education based on the relation model suggested by the object Relation Theory.
Finally, The further investigation of the Comenius' understanding of the infant and mother, which is positioned at the center of his framework of pampaedia, in the light of Object Relation Theory is suggested. The new programs should be designed to improve the quality of relationship between infant and mother.
