Kim Sa-ryang(1914-1950) is a problematic figure both as a person and writer. He was born in P'yongyang in 1914 as the second son of a rich family. He ended up in Tokyo because he had to escape the country after being pointed out as one of the leaders of a student demonstration Based on his own experience, he wrote stories about the life of Korean residents in Japan, in Japanese. He was nominated for the famous literary award 'Akutakawa' for his work 〈To the light, 빛 속으로〉 in 1940. He wrote many stories about joys and sorrows of Korean life under the Japanese colonialism focusing mainly on poor, stupid and old people. His stories depict characters as caricatures rather than personifications of an anger.
Right before The Liberation, he was in China as a member of the "Visiting group to console Korean student soldiers in Indochina". After completing his service, he escaped from Beijing to "The Liberated China" to serve with the Choson volunteer troops 조선의용군. After The Liberation, he returned in triumph to P'yongyang and he became '인민예술가' in North Korea. During the Korean War, he joined the North Korean army as a writer. While they were withdrawing, he fell behind and died of heart condition in the mountains around Wonju. No one knows the exact circumstances surrounding his death. For these reasons, his works were forbidden to read and study in South Korea.
There is not much research and evaluation of his works in North Korea, either, for political reasons and because of his family background. He was in 'Yeonanpa 연안파'. He did not come from the proletariat but from the bourgeois class; in addition, his works were written in Japanese, which qualified him as a pro-Japanese author. For these reasons his works were not published in North Korea until 1987. In spite of the controversy surrounding him, at last in 2002 in South Korea he was freed from the charge of being pro-Japanese with the explanation that his works reflect the anti-Japanese sentiment. Kim Sa-ryang wrote 25 literary works that were published before The Liberation. Among them, 21 works are written in Japanese, while the background of 16 is Korea. P'yongyang, his hometown, is the most favored geographical location in his works.
In this thesis, I am looking at the notion of 'hometown' P'yongyang. To better understand his literature and consciousness, one must explore the atmosphere of P'yongyang and the inclinations of his family. P'yongyang is the city of progressive, positive and accommodating notions, adjusting well to new situations. The inclinations of his family are easier to comprehend if one looks at the situation in Pyongyang at that time.
It is of a great significance that Kim was born in P'yongyang in a Christian family. He could build up anti-Japanese national consciousness in P'yongyang because of its progressive, open atmosphere and his Christian family. It must have been very special that he married in the center of resistance (산정현 church, the pastor of this church Ju Ki-chul was martyred in a P'yongyang jail in 1944), and to be married by Kim Kwan-sik, a famous pastor of a historical importance for the Korean church.
Personally, he was generous to his family and proud of them, but he criticized colonialism in his works. This duality, we can say, is maintaining a balance between the anti-Japanese national consciousness and a realistic sense. We can guess that it came not only from his personal character and inclinations but also from the atmosphere of P'yongyang province or P'yongyang which was only moderately conservative. These historical, geographical, and natural features of the region shaped Kim and his life and Literature.
