The aim of this paper is to compare the form of text composition and singing methods between Korean and Japanese rice planting song, especially in the reign of Yungnam province in Korea and Joogoku province in Japan.
The results are as follows;
1) As we know, Korean and Japanese rice planting song are similar in several points. for examples, singing method of given and take type which is composed by two line generally is similar, and serial composition type which is organised by the working day- from the early morning to the late evening- is also same.
2) From the japanese classic and old rice planting song text book that was written about the late of seventeen’s Century, I understand the japanese rice planting song's text was made by the theme like Koran case. Especially the evening song is made about the love affairs, and it is continued to the morning song.
3) Generally rice planting song is composed by two line. But actually the type of text line exist variously. There is 2 line, 3 or 4, 5, 6 line or much more. In the case of japanese, there are also various types from 2 line to 11 line. Most popular type is 5 line in the text book which was reported before the modern time. But now a days 2 or 3 line type is sung generally in both country. The reason is cause of additional line. In japan, additional line is called ‘Orosi’.
4) In the case of japan, they sing a same rice planting song texts for three times. This repetition is for the ritual and easy memory. I found this 3 repetition situation in korean field work texts. So the methods of repeating song 3 times is also similar performance in both country.
5) The words or refrain for adding the fun(or interest) act in sing a song. But both country’s song have different act in adding fun words. This is the results of singer’s position and status in the field work. In the case of korean, there is no grade with prior singer and posterior singer. But japanese case is different. There is some grade or status with prior singer who is called ‘Sanbai’ and posterior singers called ‘Saotome’. The former is the name of rice field god and late is the a lady to attendant the god, 'Sanbai'. So, there is dignified hierarchy.
I will prepare another paper to research the identity and feature of both country's rice planting song through the aspects of theme and material, ritual and metaphor.
