By the powerful reawakening movement of feminism, forgotten or erased voices of females could be restored, and the quality of human life and humanistic resources have become richer. Some radical feminists, however, have pushed their political, as well as theoretical, standpoints far to the extremes that, by all their rights and benefits, women should construct a counter-society of women to the present patriarchy. Mary Daly voices the main tenor of this radical feminism. In the beginning of her career, she seemed to support the idea of androgyny. But later in her Gyn/Ecology and Pure Lust, she obviously gives up her hope for the society of androgyny; instead, she maintains that women should live separately from men because they cannot achieve the goal of becoming the true, natural women, when with men around. She attempts to re-interpret terms, whose male-oriented implications we have unconsciously accepted as natural, thereby setting up the image of a hagocratic society. Daly’s incisive arguments powerfully disentangle and disclose the complicate social aspects of male domination over females. At the same time, however, her idea seems to develop on the conventional dualistic basis of male/female. Also, she treats femininity and masculinity in a way that femininity belongs to women only, and masculinity to men. This somewhat simplistic way makes her “women” and “men” look only conceptualized images of individuals and in the end her women’s world a utopia existing just in idea.
