This study identifies Korean high school and university students’ use of language learning strategies and their beliefs about language learning, followed by an investigation of the relationships between their beliefs and strategy use. Five underlying factors were discovered in the SILL: integrated and interactive strategies, metacognitive strategies, memory strategies, compensation strategies, and practice- cognitive strategies. It was found that the Korean high school and university students in this study used more practice-cognitive, metacognitive and compensation strategies than memory and integrated and interactive strategies, and that university students used strategies more frequently than high school students. Five underlying factors were found in the BALLI, as well: motivational beliefs and beliefs about formal English, self-proficiency and beliefs about social interaction, communication and beliefs about learning English, beliefs about foreign language aptitude, and beliefs about learning practical English. The results of Pearson correlations among the five belief variables and the five strategy variables show that the students’ beliefs and their strategies are greatly related. In particular, self-proficiency and beliefs about social interaction had the highest correlation to all the strategies in this study. Consequently, strategy training should be combined with belief training to help improve the students’ use of language learning strategies.
