Lee Sang-Hwa wrote several poems about ‘national land’. 「Ode to Mt. Keum-Gang」(「금강송가」)and「Spring on the deprived land」(「?앗긴 들에도 봄은 오는가」)can be regarded as archetypal poems which cleary show the relationship between ‘aestheticization of national land’ and ‘ideology of nation’. The former is an general ode to glorify the beauty of Mt. Keum-Gang and to enlight the ‘national spirit’. In the latter poem, Lee Sang-Hwa described ‘national land’ as ‘deprived land’ and ‘the land to be regained’. He idealized the ‘national land’ as divine and maternal. Therefore, this was the first case to idealized the ‘national land’ in korean modern poetry.
Lee Sang-Hwa made a close observation on the various lives and wrote many poems to glorify the creation of lives, based on that observation. These ‘odes to creation of life’ could only be written by the authentic modern subject, in other words, reflective self that might create his own world rather than just imitate the others’ world.
Lee Sang-Hwa’s method of poetizing ‘national land’ has become a general custom. Seo Jung-Joo and Shin Dong-Yeop succeeded to that method. By using this method, they could adopt the idea of ‘nation’ in their poems in an conservative or progressive way. Though they showed different attitudes towards korean history, both of them commonly used aestheticization of ‘national land’ and that of history to reinforce the sanctity of the idea of ‘nation’ and to emphasize the identical origin of ‘nation’.
The work to genealogize the usages of ‘aestheticization of national land’ is very closely related with the work to examine how poets has used the idea of ‘nation’ ideologically in korean modern poems. The aim of those works is to avoid the abuses of absolutizing nationalism which tends to give exclusive consequence to ‘nation’ and its embodied form, ‘national land’. In this context, this study is intended to suggest new views about ‘nation’ by displaying fissure and heterogeneity in the idea of ‘nation’ and by emphasizing ‘otherness’.
