This study investigated Differential Item Functioning (DIF) using the SIBTEST (Simultaneous Item Bias Test) procedure. The SIBTEST is a powerful statistical procedure for detecting and estimating DIF. The purpose of the paper is threefold: (1) to investigate whether or not the First Certificate of English (FCE) reading comprehension test contains DIF items across Asian and European language groups of test takers, (2) to examine the effect size of DIF items, and (3) to explore sources of DIF items via content analysis. The data analyzed in this study were collected from 1073 nonnative speakers of English who took the old version of the FCE paper 1 in December 1988. The results of analysis identified 25 DIF items out of 40 items across the two subsections of FCE paper 1. This study showed a preliminary hypothesis about the relationship between the contents of items and the direction of DIF values, although it needs to be replicated with different samples. Results of this study will be a springboard for future analysis and application to other data sets. In the Korean context, it will be worthwhile to investigate DIF items in English tests for group membership such as gender and academic disciplines using the SIBTEST.
