The purpose of this research was to examine the sources of learning that high performance coaches accessed in developing their coaching craft. This research involved 18 head and scholarship coaches taking part in the Australian Sports Commission's National Coaching Scholarship Program (NCSP). In this program, aspiring high performance coaches are selected to spend between one and two years with experienced head coaches from the Australian Institute of Sport or other high performance centres around Australia. The head and scholarship coaches participated in a face-to-face questionnaire lasting approximately one hour. During the questionnaire, each participant was asked to indicate the usefulness of a range of coach development activities both currently and retrospectively over the period of their coaching career. While the reported value of various coach development activities was somewhat idiosyncratic, there were some trends suggesting the value of learning on the job, and learning through others. The head coaches consistently rated 'on the job experience' as being of utmost importance for their development. A strong theme that was also present was the value of learning from coaching colleagues whether through observation, discussions, or working alongside them. An interesting finding was the value that was placed on formal tertiary study in the middle of their careers. For the scholarship coaches, 'on the job experience' or 'learning by doing' was reported to be the most valuable contributor to their development up until the point at which they joined the NCSP. Once engaged in the NCSP, 'learning by doing' was reportedly less valued in comparison to interactions with other coaching colleagues. These results have implications for the continuing development of scholarship coaches in the NCSP.
