This paper focuses on three socio-historical questions about Korean war experience and war memory of Gurim people, who have long self-governing tradition. First is the change of relationship between state power and village community, second is the interaction of class, estate and community in the process of civil struggle, third is the reconstruction of war memory after 50 years of the end of Korean war.
In this case, even though the competition for getting new land ownership among peasants is one of sources of social struggle, and it is more stronger than class struggle between landowner and peasant, there are so many another factors co-operating in the social struggle, for example, religion, estate and communal consciousness. War has been ended with the genocide by state terrorism and the surrender of village community to state power. This is a moment of inventing the nation under the divided regime in Korea.
After the war, Gurim people have diverse strategies for survival. The political preference of them is reversed comparing to prewar time, and they went another way comparing to Youngam-eup people, one of local ground of state power. Their war memory is remodelled and their oral statements on the war experience are more opened by democratization.
