Christian beginnings in Chungnam Province and Daejeon and their characteristics were typical in the establishment of Christian churches in Korea. The Christian religion in this area was closely related to major Protestant Denominations in the United States. America's Methodist Episcopal Church and the Presbyterian Church(U.S.A) had played leading roles in the formation of early churches in this area. An examination of Christian beginnings of this area will lead to features of 19th-century “evangelical” Christianity that dominated early history of Korean Christianity. This essay is an attempt to understand these features by following the process of Christian establishment in Daejon and Chungnam.
Some churches in Daejeon and Chungnam Province were established by persons who led the Hyang-chon(鄕村) society, while some were founded by new settlers in the city of Daejon. Other churches were established by the farmers whose upward mobility and search for safety led them to the Christian religion. Religious characteristics of churches in this region included such features of revivalist Protestantism as confession of sins, passion for Christian missions, and itinerant evangelism. Although these characteristics underwent changes by traditional Neo-Confucianism. Protestantism in Chungnam area basically succeeded religious beliefs of 19th-century American evangelicalism.
