Different people have different ideas about teaching grammar in present foreign language education. Some support teaching grammar while others are against it. Recently the pedagogical role of grammar in the formal language classroom has been downgraded to a considerable extent. This study searches for various ideas of pros and cons of teaching grammar. It also discusses some key grammatical terms which have frequently been used for pedagogical purposes. While there exist some voices that argue against teaching grammar for some theoretical reasons, this study claims that the arguments like this shouldn't be interpreted as abandoning the grammar in language teaching. Instead, this study contends that these terms should be taught and dealt with as a critical tool for enhancing learners' communicative capacity. In other words, when the grammatical concepts like tense, case, aspect, and so forth are fully understood by offering scaffolding comments (i.e., easily absorbed, student-oriented, or featuring 'i + 1') along with communicatively authentic input, the level of students' understanding about the target language is for sure to be raised. In sum, teaching grammar in a pedagogically appropriate manner helps the student go beyond a basic or telegraphic stage into a more sophisticated one in terms of his or her language proficiency.
