Environmental indices provide with simple and useful information especially when environmental or economic decision-making is needed. As one of main purposes of environmental decision-making is to improve polluted environmental problems, it is reasonable to aggregate environmental information for each environmental problem. Environmental problems could be evaluated using related information on economic and social situation as well as on natural science. Therefore, Comprehensive data related with usage of natural resources, environmental pollution, and environmental state are essential to make environmental indices.
Currently, many countries have tried to develope environmental indices to accomplish sustainable development. Most of them have relied on the method which combines each environmental problem and PSR(press, state, response) approaches. This provides a good instrument which matches economic activities and environment well and rearranges environmental indices systematically.
However, Korea has not established the formal environmental indices system yet. In Korea, environmental indices have been used individually or partially, ignoring a whole system. Therefore, in this study, we try to define environmental index system clearly. Then we analyze how to develope the environmental indices and how to apply indices to environmental problems.
