The purpose of this article is to reflect the meaning of play as an essential phenomenon of man and to discuss its application to Christian Education.
Play is a spontaneous, free, self-initiative act of man with amusement, but without an intention to get external outcomes.
Play has various characteristics which help the development of man as a whole. In playing we can exercise our bodily power and skills and express our feelings. Furthermore play offers opportunities to build up human relationships. Above all, it gives us freedom and aesthetic impression. In a word, play has a power to enhance our whole person.
We could compare these characteristics of play with them of religion. Moltman has argued this point in his article “Theology of Play". According to him, God's work with man and the world is His play and His church is an experimenting place of play in that God and human participate together.
We find here our Christian educational responsibility. Through “playing" Christian education we could help people to become a free, beautiful, dedicating partner of God's play.
