This paper aims to make clear the social movement and site consciousness of Kim Jeonghan as the local intellectual of Korea in the 20th century.
The invasion of foreign influence and the inflow of western civilization since the end of Joseon period shook the base of traditional intellectuals and notified beforehand the rise of modern intellectuals. Therefore the modern intellectual stratum became the social one who led the field of culture and public opinion since 1920s.
But they could not be allowed to enter the political world unlike the traditional intellectuals of Joseon period except the governmentpatronized intellectuals who justified the Imperial Japan system. Furthermore it is very difficult for them to participate in the national liberty movement under the severe reign of Imperial Japan. The most of them accordingly became the technical intellectuals who
performed the intellectual function.
On the other hand, the sense of alienation and deprivation in the local inhabitants grew increasingly, as the centralization in the field of politics, economy, society and culture deepened by the biased modernization in the contemporary times. Therefore the local intellectuals can not help adapting the system like the central intellectuals, or they stood aprat from the universal world and were absorbed in the local world. But a few local intellectuals performed the social movement and linked the universal subjets with the particular subjects. Kim Jeonghan was the one of these intellectuals.
Kim Jeonghan(金廷漢, 1908~1996) was the representative writer who had led the entire life in Busan and Gyeongsangnam-do with the peripheral people and expressed many problems of these regions in writing as the intellectual. But connecting the particular subjects of region with the universal subjects of Korean society, he attempted to testify the bonds of period and solve the historical problems by writing the novels.
To begin with, he did not buried his novels in the dichotomy of centralism and localism, but expressed the social relation around the land and the history of life in writing. Next, by internalizing the national emotion and cultural experience in his boyhood, cognizing the external subjects from the viewpoint of social science in his youth and raising the historical consciousness of his manhood, he overcame the abstract concept and secured the concrete concept.
In brief, he was the critical intellectual who conquested the limitations of local intellectual.
