Developing writing ability in a second language involves the various competencies and skills associated with linguistic, sociolinguistic and connected-discourse structures. This development requires that the writing teacher should be aware that writing is a generative process and that writers use different writing procedures, strategies, and techniques to get their messages across. The objective of this paper has been to provide information about writing and revision strategies for ESL writers. To accomplish this goal, interviews with the teachers at a US university were conducted. The method produced a detailed description for understanding how students can cope with the difficulties of writing in English. The results show that students in an ESL environment, when given a writing assignment, develop a number of strategies for finding information and revising their work. While reading was a common strategy for finding information on their topic, their attitudes varied considerably with respect to revision and the use of computer technology.
