One of the powerful methods for interpreting the core or essence of Lee sang’s literature is the analysis of the images of city, and the moment that made it appear clearly was the experience of Seongcheon. The images of city before the experience of Seongcheon had been made by the subjective thought through conscious self-isolatin and self-autism, and it had been directly expressed as ‘the artificialization of nature’. But in the face of the unfamiliar nature of Seongcheon that gave him the extreme heterogeneous feeling, he expressed his thought and feeling about the nature and the people who were living in it. In the course of the writings the artificial objects of city was used which had been familiar to him, this was different from the writings before the experience of Seongcheon in the sense that it was not mere the result of the former pure thought of the self-autism but the images through the ‘realistic’ comparison with the artificial objects. And the experience of Seongcheon became the motive that stimulates the advanced investigation of city and the city people through the important novels after that. But the more deepened insight of city and the city people in the writings after going to Tokyo was not made, and this was related to the fact that his characteristic cynical wit appeared again as the initiative thinking style and rhetoric. In the position of psychoanalysis wit is contrasted with humor which is another form of laughter, and we can think that it was because Lee sang failed to set his new dimensional superego that he could not arrive at humor which have the effect of consolation of himself.
