A type of railroad vehicle system is designed by criteria such as city structure, population distribution and economic status.
Tram railway system can be constructed with existing transportation system and is widely applied to small and mid-sized cities, in which a little higher transportation efficiency is required in comparison with the conventional bus systems.
Major characteristics of Tram system can be clearly defined as eco-friendly and economically efficient. These are consistent with main performance target of general Light Railroad Vehicles.
For the last few decades, Korean domestic Railroad Vehicle System has mainly focused on a large scale of passenger transportation between metropolitans.
In consideration of the rapid recent economical changes and Environmentally Friendly Policy, it is expected that future demands for the Tram system will be remarkably increased. This research paper will investigate proper criteria for the domestic Tram system development.
Korean domestic Tram system should be designed as it is easily constructed in CBD [Central Business District]area.For this reason, if the power source can be supplied by Secondary Cell with fast developing rate, overhead contact line will be replaced, so the system can be used for world-wide applications as well as the domestic demands.
Tram is a basic type of short-distance transportation system and mainly operated in CBD area. Therefore, one of the most important performance criteria is Ride Performance Quality in curving sections. This should be considered and designed with the existing road conditions, for example, minimum turning radius has to be under 20m for the Korean domestic use.
In addition, in order to control sudden changes in a number of passengers effectively, flexibility of Tram Unit Formation should be guaranteed and a 3-car based tram has to be extended to 5 or 7-car formation. Handicapped Person should also be assisted with 100% Floor-lowering system when requested.
