Poetry therapy is the use of literature to bring about a therapeutic interaction between the participant and facilitator. The first part of this paper surveys the history of poetry therapy, especially in the USA. Though biblio/poetry therapy is rather a new field of art therapy in Korea, it has become a growing attraction for the past several years. It is crucial that clear survey of the meaning and the history of poetry therapy in the USA was done to suggest a model and a directive.
Rilke says that perhaps all the dragons of our lives, everything that is terrible, are in its deepest being, helpless princesses only waiting for our help to see us once beautiful and brave. Poetry therapy is like the journey of Theseus into the labyrinth of our mind, holding the thread of Ariadne, to face the monster and release a beautiful princess from her prison. Creative writing in a safe, non- judgemental atmosphere of a poetry therapy session invokes a deeper understanding of oneself. Creativity is great medicine for both the creator and the one who experiences it. It prevents disease and promotes wellness. The main part of this paper discusses how literature, especially poetic elements, work as a catalyst to evoke the poet/creativity inside us.
Finally, this paper suggests poetry therapy as a possible multi-disciplinary modality in the task-oriented literature education in Korea. Now is the time that we need to accept this challenge for holistic general education to our younger generation when the violence in elementary and high schools, suicidal tendencies, depression are more and more widely spread among young students.
