We are used to thinking of history as something constructed long after the events which it attempts to record have taken place, but Brian Friel demonstrates in Making History that in fact it is also written as those events are actually happening. This paper explores how Brian Friel rejects traditional and normative concepts of history and he reconfigures postcolonial alternative histories through Making History. Hayden White provides useful reference points for Friel’s historiographic consciousness in Making History. According to White, every history is shaped by its “metahistory”－that is, the archetypal historical narrative that the historian uses to shape and structure a story about the past. Metahistories are not embedded in the past－they are imposed on the past, to give it “continuity, coherency, and meaning.” Friel acknowledges that history is always a fiction and is also committed to the project of recording historical facts in another tune.
