This article examined Hakubunkan‘s publishing activities during the Sino-Japansese War and its relations with the development of Japanese imperialism. Hakubunkan was the leading publishing house during 1890s and the early 1900s. This article argued that one of the secrets of its rise as the top company in the business was its energetic efforts to connect Japan’s war and expansion with the publishing of magazines and books.
In particular, this article surveyed the successes of Nissin Senso Jikki and Taiyo during the Sino-Japanese war. Both maganizes were carefully planned either to quickly respond to the changes following the outbreak of the war or to strengthen Hakubunkan‘s status as the top publishing house on the basis of the enormous success of Nissin Senso Jikki. One of the main characteristics of the magazines were to strongly support Japan’s war efforts and expansionist policies. For example, articles in Nissin Senso Jikki dealt with the patriotic sacrifices of soldiers and the need for Japan‘s expansionist growth. Also articles in Taiyo insisted that Japan had to secure influence and power over the Asian continent with a vision of Japan as an Asian empire.
In this way, Hakubunkan‘s emphasis on Japan’s growth into an empire during the Sino-Japanese war resulted in huge commercial successes of its publications. In contrast, the case of Minyusha whose response to the war was not very conspicuous went through decline after the Sino-Japanese war.
