As a serial study, this is the second attempt to closely examine the biblical background of Christian worship. This study aims to research the liturgical-theological perspective of the Sinai event - with respect to the history of salvation, especially under the basic idea of the so-called divine name theology and divine-name-invocation theology. Ultimately, the pur-pose of this study is to ascertain the true foundation for Christian Iitur-gical theology. In Exodus, God brought the people of Israel up out of Egypt, and to Mount Sinai, where He entered into a covenant relationship with them. A striking feature of this covenant is not only the content of the agreement but the context in which the agreement was made. The full context of the Sinai event is described in chapters 19-24 of the Book of Exodus, and therefore, the liturgical review of the Sinai event will be centered in these chapters.
First, in these chapters we can find the elements of Christian wor-ship with the principles of worship.: Call to worship (Exodus 19: 3-8); confession of sins, proclamation of forgiveness and experiencing of God’s presence (Exodus 19: 9ff); Scripture readings and sermon (Exodus ch. 20-23); time of decision and ratification (Exodus 24: 1-8); feast of fellow-ship (Exodus 24: 9-11).
Then, in the Ten Commandments (Decalogue)(Exodus 20: 1-17) we examine the relationship between “the name of God” and the worship. Next, in “the book of covenant”(Exodus 20:22 - 23:33) we examine the relationship between “the name of God” and the worship system.
Finally, the most pertinent part of the Sinai event is the public meet-ing that took place between God and Israel at the foot of Mount Sinai(Exodus 24: 1-8). This meeting is important because it contains the most basic structural elements for a meeting between God and His people. These five elements that are the very substance of public worship are: convocation by God, structure of responsibility, proclamation of the Word, assent of people, and act of ratification. Overall, this concludes the second stage of this serial study examining the biblical background of Christian worship.
