This study examines the grammatical pattern expressions that appeared in the Korean conversation textbooks and learners’ dictionaries. This study especially investigates the grammatical pattern expressions with the ending forms and classifies them by their discourse functions. The grammatical patterns are usually classified into the category-based classification of patterns and the lexically approached classification of patterns. The category-based classification of patterns deals with grammatical categories with regard to the sentence mood, tenses, causatives, passives and negatives etc. In the lexically approached classification of patterns, the phrases and sentences are used as idiomatically fixed patterns. This study especially focuses on the lexically approached classification of patterns because special discourse functions appear only in the lexically approached classification of patterns. Since this study deals with the ‘refusal’ discourse functions which are found only in the ending forms, I analyzes the ending forms only. Until now, the grammar teaching has only covered the forms and meanings of individual grammatical pattern expressions. However, learners want to know which grammatical pattern expressions can provide particular discourse functions and how to distinguish the usage of these grammatical pattern expressions with the same discourse function. In this regard, this study attempts to examine the distinctive usages of grammatical pattern expressions that have the same discourse functions in contrast with the previous studies. In particular, this study focuses on the discourse function of refusal forms and analyzes the related grammatical pattern expressions. This study also divides the refusal forms into the direct refusal and indirect refusal. A variety of vocabularies and grammatical patterns are used according to the degree of refusal and the preceding speech. This study can contribute to discussion of Discourse grammar and help Korean learners to use appropriate refusal expressions in their conversations.
