The aim of this paper is to construct a Grammatical System and Educational Substance of Korean as a Foreign Language. In this respect, we first examined some previous studies on the construction of Korean grammatical systems : they are divided into two types by their position of Korean grammar for foreigners. One thinks Korean grammar for foreigners is similar to that of Korean native speakers. The other considers Korean grammatical system for foreigners is quite different from that of Korean native speakers. We showed that in order to teach Korean effectively for foreigners, we need a new grammatical system of Korean based on the function of grammatical element or communication and the notion or meaning of things and phenomena. We also presented a new provisional grammatical system of Korean as a Foreign Language which includes four systems : system of Korean basic grammar, system of grammatical elements based on their grammatical functions, system of notion and meaning of things and phenomena and system of functions of communication.Secondly, we tried to show how to construct effectively the educational substance of Korean grammar. In order to do that, we examined some previous researches on the construction of educational substance of grammar : they are mostly focused on grammatical elements and we need more researches based on the notion and meaning or the function of communication. We also proposed some concrete methods with which we can make the educational substance of Korean grammar more effective for foreign learners.(Kyung Hee University)
