The Nuuchahnulth suffix -?at causes both syntactic and semantic changes, when it appears on the predicate. Previous work has assigned different functions to the suffix. In this paper, I provide both a morphological and syntactic analysis of - ?at, claiming that -?at is a passive marker sensitive to person hierarchy and topicality. For this purpose, I examine sentences with and without the suffix and show what kinds of morphological and syntactic changes the suffix causes. This paper establishes the syntactic status of the suffix by introducing evidence from various kinds of constructions.
