Film <Silenced>, the events featured there, Gong Ji-young’s novel behind it, and the passage of Dogani law form a continuous series of events that is subject to interpretation with some interest by the concept of remediation concocted by Jay David Bolter and Richard Grusin. Remediation is “a formal logic used by a new medium when it reconstructs the form a work in the old medium”. Media mutually evaluate, reproduce and replace one another through remediation. Remediation between cinema and novels has been a starting point for cinema that need to mediate a narrative through audio-visual elements, and also has been a fateful challenge for literature that could not avoid thinking in new modes of visual recreation after the birth of cinema. Full-fledged research on the narratives of cinema and literature began with semiotics. While semiotic research focused on the commonalities and differences between the two media in formal structures and communicative systems, ‘adaptation’ research focuses the direct relations of impact between individual works. The current adaptation research is moving in the direction of overcoming the dichotomous perspective of the original and its derivative. The concept of ‘remediation’ intervenes here to convert this dichotomy. It redirects attention away from whether successful change of medium has been accomplished, to adaptation as the process of creating a new cultural space that corresponds with the original. This article reconsiders Aimless Bullet (Obaltan 1961), The Foggy Town (Angae 1967 ), the thus far proven masterly cinematization of the original novels, and Mulberry (Ppong 1986) which has not been discussed for its relation with the original <Aimless Bullet> materializes the self-referential attitudes of cinema and literature in a narrative dimension and demonstrates the respective positions of literature and cinema in the changing contours of the cultural landscape. <The Foggy Town> methodically embraces reecriture that casts questions upon the certainty of narratives and thereby reappropriates the authority of the narrator proposed in the novel and critically approaches the structures of the original novel’s narrative and emotions. <Mulberry> creatively transforms the original to fuse metaphorically with epic societal moments and sexual symbols, thereby revealing the contemporary political powers’ scheme to hide the societal conditions through erotism.
