The thesis is a comparative analysis about the works of Paul Eluard of France, Man Ray of the United States and Lee Sang of Korea. They were artists and poets who played a leading role through French, American and Korean surrealist poetry and literature. We focused on literary works including Eluard and Ray’s illustrative poem “Les mains libres” and Lee Sang’s “Ogamdo.” The research mainly compares the visual expression techniques shown through the writings and illustrations from the artists’ literary works. Eluard and Ray’s works demonstrate the poetic language and the dissolution of the illustration from the poetry and visual illustrations, and Lee Sang’s works confirmed the visual effects shown by the signs and anti-poetic words. From their works, the special visual effects can be seen, such as mathematic words by the written letters, illustrations and numbers, and geometric expressions through shapes and signs. The artworks can be seen as the automatic writings that the surrealist poets and artists sought to pursue or the expression from the inner side, which originated from “An image is the creation of a pure mind.” Moreover, the experimental visual expressions shown by Eluard, Ray, and Lee Sang surpass the existing social morality and classic rationalism, and can be told as the creative and avant-garde technique that goes beyond the traditional literature and art.
