This study aimed to examine the formative process, contents and meaning of diplomatic etiquette in the reigning period of King Taejo in the Goryeo Dynasty. For this purpose, it attempted to discuss dthe object of diplomatic etiquette in the reigning period of King Taejo and investigate its basic principle. And it attempted to investigate what position the Goryeo Dynasty came to have at that time when the actual contents of its diplomatic etiquette were formed and it was operated. As a result, the following conclusion could be drawn:
The object of diplomatic etiquette in the reigning period of King Taejo, its guests, included the old Taebong forces, Hubaekje and Silla, and Houliang Dynasty, Houtang Dynasty, and Houqin Dynasty, the Khithai and the like. Among other things, King Taejo treated guests with the utmost courtesy based on condescendence and reverence, starting with the efforts to persuade the old Taebong forces, Hubaekje and Silla to join him. The procedures of the Silla State were largely applied to treating guests with the utmost courtesy. The ritual of treating guests with the utmost courtesy was the mechanism that made it possible to exchange with and absorb several local powers, or Silla and Hubaek. And King Taejo established Yebu or Yebingseong as the body in charge of the ritual of treating guests with the utmost courtesy. And he formed the ritual of treating guests with the utmost courtesy in relation to the exchange with Houtang and Houqin as well as installation after Iltong-Samhan. King Taejo could establish the international position of the Goryeo Dynasty by practicing the rituals of reception, send-off and the like. At last, the ritual of treating guests with the utmost courtesy operated by King Taejo based on Hyehwaron of condescendence and reverence performed an important role in becoming one axis of the international order by contributing to the unification of Hubaekje and leading to installation from Chinese dynasties(Houtang and Houqin). And it is thought that it became the archetype for the Korean ritual of treating guests with the utmost courtesy.
