The Korean Armistice Agreement in 1953 brings about a ceasefire, but technically the North and South Korea are still at war. Inevitably, the hardships of refugee life still haunt the tortured souls and the divided country. Both the Korean short stories “Accidental Firing”, “Shorty Kim”, and “Times of Disbelief” and the American novel I Am the Clay not only tell the stories of Korean War refugees who are overwhelmed by the grief of the ruined family and the homeless destitution, but also portray the images of Korean people who don’t want to be bogged down in the swamps of sadness, helplessness or depression and who look forward to the more optimistic and life-affirming way of existence. However, the different perspectives and approaches adopted by the Korean and American authors in their stories in turn lead to the diagonally opposite ways of overcoming and dealing with life challenges. This paper presents comparative research on the works of Korean and American authors to explore and substantiate the Will to Power and Orientalism based on Western Centrism that are embodied in the images of women and children war refugees.
