This article is a critical analysis of Kojin Karatani’s work - The structure of empire - center, periphery, semi periphery, especially on China. Empire theory of Karatani is a discourse predicated on the rise of China. He divides the Chinese Empire into center, periphery and semi periphery, and focuses on their geopolitics. His core claim is to overcome the problems of US imperialism - nothing but the expansion of capital=state=nation - by the principle of the Chinese Empire. The principle of the Chinese Empire means a system ruling a number of nations or countries by ‘exchange’ of obedience and protection. In the history of ideas, this principle of the Chinese Empire was built as a Chinese imperial ruling ideology by Dongzhongshu(董仲舒)s world thought(天下思想). He hopes that the principle of the traditional Empire could be reconstructed in the current People’s Republic of China. He presents the economic development and the socialist equality as two conditions of the reconstruction. Therefore, this article criticizes his theory at some point below. The principle of the traditional Empire is too ideally interpreted. Realizing the principle of the traditional Empire in the current People’s Republic of China is bound to have a various forms of internal and external constraints. Loss of tension between the legitimacy of imperial domination and the nation-state principle is leaded to the weakening of the external persuasiveness. Empire theory of Karatani could not see the above problem correctly because his argument is on such a lineage of Japanese intellectuals’ recognizing China that is still trapped in the theory of overcoming modernity of the 20th century. Finally, this paper points out that there is a serious logical breakdown between Karatani’s ambitious initiative of the ‘World Republic’ and the principles of Empire presented in his The structure of Empire.
