This paper attempts to criticise Kojin Karatani’s theory of modes of exchange by relating it to K. Marx’s materialist conceptions of history. Karatani claims that there is a close tripartite interconnection among such different modes of exchange as capitalism, nation, and state in today’s world, and he emphasizes that nation and state should be understood as part of economic basis.
Karatani’s theory of modes of exchange appears to be a critical alternative to Marx’s materialist theory of history in this respect, however, he fails to get the full grasp of the concept of Marx’s economic basis, materialism, thereby leading to a serious misunderstanding of his materialist conception of history. Though Karatani insists that his approach is non-teleological, his grand schema clearly represents a return to a speculative philosophy of history. He ignores that Marx’s materialist view of history has features of ‘anti-philosophy’ as well as ‘anti-system.’
