This study compared and analyzed bone mineral density and arterial stiffness of 64 college students which were divided into two groups: a group of 32 students with regular exercise habit and a group of the other 32 students without exercise habit. We obtained the results as below. Total bone mineral density of the group with regular exercise habit was significantly statistically higher than that of the group without exercise habit. Spine bone mineral density and femur bone mineral density of the group with regular exercise habit were significantly higher as well. Both groups showed normal figures of right brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity and left brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity and there was no significant difference between the groups. Right arterial stiffness of the group with regular exercise habit was faster than that of the other group, which was a significant difference. Left arterial stiffness of the group with regular exercise habit was also faster but showed no significant difference. As a conclusion of all the results above, regular exercise habit not only improves bone density and lowers brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity of a college student but also has a positive effect on arterial stiffness. There were no distinct symptoms of osteoporosis and cardiovascular diseases among the young people in their twenties. However various factors such as an irregular life habit and lack of exercise affect bone mineral density and arterial stiffness. Therefore it is important to correct one’s life habit and work out regularly to prevent osteoporosis and cardiovascular diseases, and development of regular and systematic exercise programs for university students is highly needed.
