Among the factors which affected the rise of ‘clearer’ antislavery discourse and political activities for abolition in the 1770s, the development of antislavery writings should be the subject of close investigation. For this purpose, this study analyzes antislavery narratives expressed in the Arminian Magazine, founded by John Wesley in 1778.
In this magazine, a transformative process of ‘low level’ antislavery discourses into ideological conviction or abolitionism was appeared. Wesley collected records of past events and edited them in pursuance of creating collective memories of the antislavery movement for this purpose. He also used court records concerning legal status of slaves in order to support the rationale of the Committee for the Abolition of the Slave Trade in London and this affected the initial development of the antislavery movement. These examples show that antipathy toward slavery was transformed into antislavery ideology and promoted political actions for the abolition of slavery during this period to some extent.
The antislavery records of Wesley remind us that history is basically a matter of records but the creation of those writings also catalyzes the formation of history. This has created the need for a more comprehensive understanding of the correlation between two.
