Due to a rapid progress of aging and the increase in double-income families in a Korean society, the demands for social care service are also sharply growing. Nevertheless, the gradual reduction in social welfare provided by the government and the excessive commercialization of social care service offered by for-profit enterprises exacerbate the quality and the quantity of social care service, especially for the vulnerable social group. In order to resolve this issue, a social enterprise which can provide a high-quality care service received much attention from researchers as well as practitioners. However, the social and economic performance evaluation of a social enterprise is still a relatively under-explored area. In this respect, based on the literatures on social enterprises and balance scorecard, this study investigates the propriety of balanced scorecard in assessing social and economic performance of a social enterprise. Moreover, this study describes the case of Dounuri, a social enterprise that provides social care service for the vulnerable such as senior citizens and the disabled people and offers jobs to low-income families, to demonstrate applicability of amended balanced scorecard for social enterprises. Theoretical and practical implications are also discussed.
