This paper explores historical trace by focusing on ‘aspects of Gopyo’, which pretend to be drifted, especially for Jeju Islanders among other castaways in the late Joseon Dynasty. This research studies an ultimate background(cause) for the Jeju People’s Gopyo by tracing the specific patterns of Jeju People’s behavior.
‘Drift’ can be defined as a marine accident, where one is forced out from destination or cultural territory without one’s intension due to an unsettledness of weather(wind, typhoon) and ocean currents while sailing. However, among these castaways, some Gopyo’s figure, that crosses over to foreign country with full of intension and purpose, is often discovered.
On the second chapter, borrowing transcriptions of ‘Gopyo’, which were written in different ways in ancient documents, were examined. In the 『Records of the Border Defense Council』. 『Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, and 『Byunryejipyo』, it used the word ‘Gopyo’, while in the Gyeongseyupyo, written by Yakyong Jeong, the ‘Gopyo’ is recorded as ‘Gajakpyoyin’. Meanwhile, in a document called Hojeokjungcho that is written in the 19th century and existed in village on Jeju Island, it can be checked that it writes the word as ‘Pyoryudomang’.
Moreover, the chapter three examines two aspects of the Jeju People’s Gopyo, who got adrift in the late Joseon dynasty, from historical records. The first aspect is a case where sailors intentionally drifted to foreign country, neither by the unsettledness of weather nor by the marine accident. If taking a closer view on reality of the Jeju People’s Gopyo among related cases, the fact that the Jeju Islanders tried to be adrift towards China five times(1827·1829·1833·1836·1837) within ten years from 1827 to 1837, can be found. Except the second try on 1829, they safely returned to their country as intended, after performing the disguised drift in China. Meanwhile, the second aspect is that the Jeju Islanders disguised as foreigners. In other words, there is an example of Wonchun Lee’s Gopyo who disguised as Japanese and pretended that he was drifted from other country(Japan) to Joseon.
Lastly, through an inductive analyzing the cases of castaways to and from Jeju Island as mentioned above, it draws a number of factors why the Jeju Islanders performed Gopyo at the risk of their life. The main causes are the hospitable treatment and compensation that were provided to castaways from country with drifting ashore such as China, Japan, and Ryukyu.
By researching the Jeju People’s intentional drift in the late Joseon dynasty and by closely looking into the reality of Gopyo, this paper discovered some hidden truth of Jeju People’s drift.
